What is your book about and when was it published?

Published: October 2024

In a world shattered by the words “you have breast cancer,” Shelley found herself navigating a labyrinth of fear and uncertainty. Peek-A-Boob is her courageous tale of transformation from diagnosis to triumph, where she tackles tough obstacles, such as ghosting by friends, standing up for what she felt was best for her treatment, and moving forward from breast cancer back to an optimistic future. With heartwarming quotes and uplifting encouragement, the author helps readers find solace when grappling with doubts and despair. Venture into the unique chapter “Man to Man,” penned by Shelley’s husband, offering a rare male perspective on battling breast cancer alongside a loved one. For those seeking an ally in their journey toward healing, this book stands as an original masterpiece—seamlessly blending personal testimony with practical guidance. Peek-A-Boob is not just a book; it’s a promise of unwavering companionship in the battle against breast cancer.

What inspired you to write your book?

Sitting in the doctor’s office, my mind raced with questions and fears. How will this diagnosis change my life? Will I make it through this battle? And what about my sexuality? But the doctor’s response was always the same: “It’s standard of care.” It wasn’t enough. I wanted to understand the science behind each treatment and medication. I needed the knowledge to empower me in this fight and make informed decisions. As I went through this journey, I realized many others like me were searching for answers and feeling alone. That’s why I poured my heart and soul into writing Peek-A-Boob. To give a voice to those facing breast cancer and to arm them with the information they need to take control of their health. I hope everyone who reads this book feels informed, prepared, and loved, knowing they are not alone in their fight against this disease.

What success did you achieve with your book that you’d like to share?

Since writing Peek-A-Boob: Uncovering Breast Cancer, I’ve been invited to speak at numerous women’s events, and I’m very grateful for these opportunities.  My presentation consists of sharing my breast cancer journey and raising awareness about breast cancer. This has been incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to educate others on this important issue. Additionally, on April 19th, I will be honored by the Susan G. Komen Association as Oklahoma’s Woman of Inspiration for 2025 for my efforts in providing vital information through my book. I’ve sold most of my books at the events where I’m the featured speaker. I’m still working on increasing my Amazon sales. The speakers’ class I attended through the Non-Fiction Authors Association was invaluable, and now I speak about three times a month.

How long did this take to achieve? What steps did you take that helped?

About two months before my book was published, I began to market it through social media. For an entire year before its publication, I committed to posting videos or pictures every single day to establish a solid online presence. Now, let me tell you, there were plenty of hits and misses along the way, but each one was a learning experience. This consistent social media engagement opened doors for speaking gigs, especially since I shared quick clips on topics I could discuss, like breast cancer. So, in the grand scheme of things, it took a year to pave the path to success, and I’m still putting in the work each day.

Was there anything about the process that didn’t help?

One of the strategies I tried was setting up a booth at health fairs, thinking my book on breast cancer would be a big hit in this type of environment. However, the outcome was always the same after participating in several events. I’d spend six hours at my booth and only manage to sell about two books while incurring the costs of being a vendor. I discovered that attendees at these events were primarily interested in the free promotional items offered by vendors. The people strolling up and down the aisles of booths weren’t inclined to make purchases. Some even asked me if I was giving away my book for free. Despite these setbacks, I am determined to keep experimenting to help me find better marketing strategies.

If the NFAA and/or our community was instrumental in helping you achieve this success, how?

NFAA played a crucial role in my journey to success in a number of ways. Through their newsletter, I expanded my knowledge about writing and the business aspects of being an author. Winning the NFAA Gold Medal Award for my book, Peek-A-Boob: Uncovering Breast Cancer, set it apart from other books on this important topic. The gold seal from this award, featured on my book and used in promotional efforts, has given me a level of credibility I would not have achieved otherwise. Taking the NFAA speakers class made me realize my worth—understanding that I deserved to be compensated for my presentations, or at least have the opportunity to sell my books during them. Being a part of NFAA and proudly showcasing my membership seal fills me with pride.

What’s next for you?

After finishing Peek-A-Boob, I dipped my toes into fiction but quickly realized my passion lies in nonfiction. So, I shelved my fictional story and embarked on writing a journal. I can see you rolling your eyes, thinking, another journaling book? You’re not wrong; the market is flooded. My journal is unique because it offers three hundred and sixty-five prompts, each designed to help readers explore their true selves by tackling challenging questions. I start every topic with a brief paragraph sharing my experiences or thoughts, often drawn from my journey of self-discovery, and then I invite the reader to reflect on their feelings.

For a bit of background, I ran a mental health clinic for women who couldn’t afford therapy. The questions in this journal are the ones we used in group and private sessions to help individuals uncover their deep feelings and beliefs. When people are secure in who they are, they’re less likely to be swayed into actions that conflict with their values and standards. As readers explore their answers to the questions in this journal, they’ll emerge stronger and more self-assured. I hope to finish this project in three months, though I’m still brainstorming a title. Stay tuned!
