What is your book about?

My book is about my father during World War II and discovering his history long after he passed away. It is a story of what it was like to enlist in the Army Air Corps during World War II, train to be part of a ten-man crew on a B-17, fly that plane from America to England, and participate in the daily “suicide” missions in 1943 before the Allies became masters of the air. The book also describes what it was like to be shot down and captured and to spend two years at the notorious Stalag 17B Nazi prisoner-of-war camp, battling disease, starvation, extreme cold, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. And then to return home, only to fight more battles.

I also share details of my research, aiming to inspire readers to learn and share their own World War II veteran’s history with future generations before these stories and the lessons learned silently slip away.

What inspired you to write your book?

I always knew my father was a Prisoner of War (POW) during World War II, but I did not know for how long. When our family helped our mother apply for VA benefits due to her escalating health care costs, we found out our father had been a POW for almost two years. That was jarring and prompted me to research his story further.

If you have a business related to your book, tell us about it:

No business, but I write a blog with tips on researching your veteran’s story. I also volunteer and write a quarterly newsletter for a World War II historical organization.

What is a typical day like for you?

Coffee! Ten minutes of news and then a few hours to write. I usually take a walk and visit with friends and family. During ski season—I ski!

What do you most enjoy about what you do?

I love the quiet. I enjoy being able to focus on my research and uncover new facts related to my book.

What are some favorite books you’d recommend to our readers?

I am now immersed in World War II nonfiction—anything World War II. Regarding fiction, I recently read The Paris Library by Janet Skeslien Charles. It was told from the perspective of a librarian living in Paris during World War II—a great twist at the end and a love story to boot.

What advice do you have to offer our readers?

If you enjoy a book, give it a review on Amazon! Authors love to hear from their readers, so check out their websites and submit your contact information and any questions/thoughts you would like to share.

That I wrote a book!

What’s next for you?

I am writing another book related to my first book. There was an individual I came across while writing about my father. He was the American Camp Leader at Stalag 17B. From my perspective, he was an exceptional leader for so many of the prisoners of war during World War II in the most dire circumstances. A true American hero. I felt his story needed to be told in full.
